Borlase has more than 20 years of technical and business experience in the electric utility T&D industry, including leadership positions in sales, business development, marketing, product development, engineering, and consulting. He previously worked as business development director responsible for strategic direction, leadership, and growth in the development and deployment of GE Energy’s global smart grid solutions. Borlase received his Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degrees in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a registered professional engineer.

About the Author Harry Dembicki, Jr., PhD, is a retired petroleum geochemistry whose career in the corporate O&G industry spanned nearly 40 years. Dr. Dembicki’s areas of expertise in geochemistry include the application of biomarker technology, basin modeling, utilizing micro- and macro-seepage data both onshore and offshore, pyrolysis gas chromatography and thermal extraction-gas chromatography, mapping regional trends in source rock potential, and well site geochemical tools for both source rock and reservoir evaluation. Dr. Dembicki has published 23 papers on various aspects of organic and petroleum geochemistry, has made 27 oral and 13 poster presentations at conferences, and has two U.S. patents on instrument design. He serves as a reviewer for AAPG Bulletin, AAPG Special Publications, Organic Geochemistry, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Journal of Marine and Petroleum Geology, Chemical Geology, Applied Geochemistry, Computers & Geosciences, Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, and Journal of Hazardous Materials. I'm not easily enamored with all the leadership books out there, but Henry's new book brings a unique perspective that I'm finding helpful in my own leadership and as I coach other leaders. The general premise, that you as a leader really are responsible for and have control over setting the culture and achieving the results you hope for, is good. Henry brings a range of contributing factors in each chapter. On the downside, the book is somewhat simplistic, somewhat lacking in really practical help, and most annoying of all, Henry is the savior of every illustrated plight..."so, I was consulting this CEO and I asked her this one question, and walla, her company was saved." Of course, publishers love this kind stuff, but it drives me crazy. But, if you can get past that, and really think through the implications in your own leadership and how you coach other leaders, the general principles here are actually on the money, and very helpful

I enjoyed most of the book, but the last chapter was worth the entire book. It is where the gold was. I learned more in that chapter than the rest of the book combined.Personally, I think Dr. Cloud should have focused on that area more than any other.The book is chalk full of illustrations and stories to fill in the gap between practical real life and theory.Thank you Sir!

Dr. Henry Cloud does a nice job describing common pitfalls management makes and then explains how to empower yourself or leadership teams to get a result. It is an easy read and at Chapter 2 the reader understands that he is ridiculously in charge and the sky is the limit for his business if he can get his management teams to also realize this. Consequently the manager can make decisions to get more out of employees. He may possibly decide which managers or employees are not part of the solution and not helping the company succeed. Understanding what the leader has created and what he has allowed educates the leader to realize the best and worst his leadership has created and allowed and take charge and make changes. This book is not a 10 step book but does have questions at the end of each chapter. It deals with communication skills as well as leadership issues and the reader may see himself or his leadership teams in a different light after reading it and choose a different path to success.

If your still in business after 3 years, it means you probably have a good sense of product, people and procedures. This is a great look at the culture that naturally forms around the PPP and how to keep growing by intentional building a healthy business culture (or jumpstart stagnant growth).

It's a leadership book worth reading. Henry makes you realize how important it is to take charge and really drive the culture. I've been through training and coaches that really focus on numbers for performance, but that always generates eventual poor results. When you focus on helping lead your team in a great environment everyone wins.

This book was life-changing for me. I learned so much about leadership and being on a team in general. Highly recommended for everyone, not just leaders.

About the Author
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904–1984) was a distinguished scientist, physicist, and engineer. After suffering a crippling injury, he began an intense study of the relationship between bodily movement and healing that culminated in the Feldenkrais Method®.

Judo master Gunji Koizumi was the founder of the Budokai and a pioneer of judo in Europe.

Michel Brousse,a seventh-degree black belt, teaches the cultural history of sport and the didactics of judo at Bordeaux University in France. He is the author of numerous books and articles on these subjects. A former member of the French national judo team, he currently serves as Research Director of the International Judo Federation.

Dennis Leri is one of Moshe Feldenkrais’s original American students, with more than thirty years of experience teaching the Feldenkrais Method® and training new practitioners. His martial arts practice includes boxing, aikido, Chen-style T’ai Chi, and Lan Shou Kung Fu.

There are a half a dozen footnotes every few pages (6). Maybe in the next printing the footnotes could be published in a second volume for easy reference (7). It's the only way to make this read less tedious.All that said...it is an extremely comprehensive treatment of the subject told in a mildly interesting narrative. Having read a few other books on this topic I would call this treatment more-or-less average (8). If you're interested in transportation logistics it's not a bad read, but do not purchase this text thinking it's a casual read...you will be disappointed (9).The cover is nice.Notes1 - Does not include the 18 pages preceding numbered page 1.2 - 278 refers to numbered page 278, not physical page 278.3 - The author calls them "Notes". The "notes" pages have the corresponding referenced page ranges in the header.4 - Supplemental material in this context refers to the "notes", bibliography, abbreviations and the index.5 - Perhaps this book was not meant to be a storytelling book but instead a reference text.6 - Figuratively, not literally.7 - At additional cost. Of course the Kindle version probably wins in this respect.8 - Average in this context refers to a bell-shaped normalized distribution.9 - Disappointment level is frequently a function of expectation. What a great story! It's hard to appreciate how this boring, ubiquitous thing - the shipping container rapidly crept into every facet of our lives. These things are relatively new but they're everywhere. Levinson's book shows you how the container was developed, how it spread, and what it's used for. You'll learn about the early pioneers and the companies they spawned, some of which are still around. Just as fascinating, Levinson describes the world before "the box" - you'll be surprised how different transportation was in the recent past. There's no moralizing here, he just presents the facts in an objective way and lets you see the world as it is. Levinson comes across as genuinely interested in the subject and it rubs off on the reader. This is a book I've lent to friends as "you've got to read this". Everyone enjoys it. If you are a fan of human ingenuity or the history of engineering, international commerce, shipping, etc, you'll enjoy this book too.

You probably never thought much about it, I would bet. Me neither. You know, those big, ugly metal boxes - take them off the ship with specialized cranes, bolt them to a truck or stack them two high on a flat bed train car and get them where they are going. Fascinating stuff and I would have rated the book higher but it tends to be dry, repetitive stuff and at times the chapters seemed more like sequential essays than a book. You know it may be a bit too on the scholarly side when your kindle indicates that you are only 60% finished when you finish the last chapter. The remaining 40%? Notes, bibliography, and index. So, looking a for a very thorough examination of the topic? This is your tome.

Within a few short decades, containers revolutionised world trade. Containers of goods could be seamlessly moved from a factory, between trucks, trains, and ships to customers. Where once it may have taken months to ship a product from the US to Europe, it can now take less than a week. Global trade skyrocketed!Nobody predicted the enormous impact that containers were to have on the global economy. Once, firms concentrated their factories in one location to minimise transport costs. With the advent of fast, cheap and reliable container shipping, component manufacture was farmed out around the world to the cheapest supplier. The structures of port cities changed drastically, with whole longshore communities being destroyed, and factories moving to where land was cheap. Of course, countries in Asia soon became major manufacturing powers.

Feeling Overwhelmed...How to Turn It Around

Often in life, events occur that we truly can't control. The company we're working for "downsizes" and we get laid off. Our spouse leaves us. A family member becomes ill, or someone close to us dies. The government cuts a program we've depended on. In these situations, we may feel as if there is simply nothing we can do to make things better.

Maybe you've had the experience of trying everything you knew to get a job, to help your family, to find your soulmate, or just to feel happier. But nothing seemed to work. When we try a new approach, try our best, yet we still fail to reach our goal, often we fear trying again. Why? Because we all want to avoid pain! And nobody wants to fail again. Nobody wants to give his or her all, only to be disappointed. Often, after many of these experiences of disappointment, we stop trying! We get to the point where we believe that nothing will work.

If you find yourself at the point where you're not even willing to try, you've put yourself in a place called "learned helplessness." You've literally learned -- or taught yourself -- that you're "helpless."

The good news is that you're wrong. You can make things happen! You can change anything in your life today by changing your perceptions and changing your actions.

Many people tell me, "I've tried millions of ways to succeed, and nothing works!" Or, "I've tried thousands of ways!" Think about it. They probably haven't even tried hundreds of ways to change things, or even dozens. Most people have tried eight, nine, ten ways to make a change, and when it hasn't worked out, they've given up.

The key to success is to decide what's most important to you and then take massive action each day to make it better, even when it doesn't look as if it's working.

I'll give you an example. Have you ever heard of a guy named Colonel Sanders? Of course you have. How did Colonel Sanders become such an unbelievable success? Was it because he was born wealthy? Was his family rich? Did they send him to a top university like Harvard? Maybe he was successful because he started his business when he was really young. Are any of these true?

The answer is no. Colonel Sanders didn't begin to fulfill his dream until he was 65 years old! What drove him to finally take action? He was broke and alone. He got his first Social Security check for $105, and he got mad. But instead of blaming society or just writing Congress a nasty note, he started asking himself, "What could I do that would be valuable for other people? What could I give back?" He started thinking about what he had that was valuable to others.

His first answer was, "Well, I have this chicken recipe everyone seems to love! What if I sold my chicken recipe to restaurants? Could I make money doing that?" Then he immediately thought, "That's ridiculous. Selling my recipe won't even pay the rent." And he got a new idea: "What if I not only sold them my recipe but also showed them how to cook the chicken properly? What if the chicken was so good that it increased their business? If more people came to see them and they made more chicken sales, maybe they would give me a percentage of those additional sales."

Many people have great ideas. But Colonel Sanders was different. He was a man who didn't just think of great things to do. He put them into action. He went and started knocking on doors, telling each restaurant owner his story: "I've got a great chicken recipe, and I think if you use it, it'll increase your sales. And I'd like to get a percentage of that increase."

Well, many people laughed in his face. They said, "Look, old man, get out of here. What are you wearing that stupid white suit for?" Did Colonel Sanders give up? Absolutely not. He had the # 1 key to success; I call it personal power. Personal power means being persistent in taking action: Every time you do something, you learn from it, and you fred a way to do it better next time. Colonel Sanders certainly used his personal power! Instead of feeling bad about the last restaurant that had rejected his idea, he immediately started focusing on how to tell his story more effectively and get better results from the next restaurant.

How many times do you think Colonel Sanders heard no before getting the answer he wanted? He was refused 1,009 times before he heard his first yes. He spent two years driving across America in his old, beat-up car, sleeping in the back seat in his rumpled white suit, getting up each day eager to share his idea with someone new. Often, the only food he had was a quick bite of the samples he was preparing for prospective buyers. How many people do you think would have gone for 1,009 noes -- two years of noes! -- and kept on going? Very few. That's why there's only one Colonel Sanders. I think most people wouldn't get past twenty noes, much less a hundred or a thousand! Yet this is sometimes what it takes to succeed.

If you look at any of the most successful people in history, you will find this common thread: They would not be denied. They would not accept no. They would not allow anything to stop them from making their vision, their goal, a reality. Did you know that Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream of creating "The Happiest Place on Earth"? All the banks thought he was crazy. He wasn't crazy; he was a visionary and, more important, he was committed to making that vision a reality. Today, millions of people have shared in "the joy of Disney," a world like no other, a world launched by the decision of one man.

When I lived in my crummy little apartment, washing my dishes in the bathtub, I had to keep reminding myself of these kinds of stories. I had to keep reminding myself that NO PROBLEM IS PERMANENT. NO PROBLEM AFFECTS MY ENTIRE LIFE. THIS TOO SHALL PASS IF I CONTINUE TO TAKE MASSIVE, POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE ACTION. I kept thinking, "Even though my life looks terrible right now, there are many things to be thankful for, like the two friends I have, or the fact that I have all my senses, or that I can breathe fresh air." I constantly reminded myself to focus on what I wanted, to focus on solutions instead of problems. And I remembered that no problem affects my entire life, even though it may look like it right now.

So I decided I would no longer believe that my whole life was screwed up simply because I had financial difficulties or emotional frustrations. I decided that there was nothing wrong with me, but that I was simply in "lag time." In other words, I knew that if I were to continue nurturing the seeds I had planted -- continue doing the right things -- I would make it out of this winter of my life and into spring, when I would reap the rewards of years of seemingly fruitless efforts. I also decided that doing exactly the same things over and over again and expecting a different result was insane. I had to try something new, and I had to keep on until I found the answers I needed.

My message to you is simple, and in your heart you know it's true: Massive, consistent action with pure persistence and a sense of flexibility in pursuing your goals will ultimately give you what you want, but you must abandon any sense that there is no solution. You must focus immediately on the actions you can take today, even if they are small ones.

This makes sense, doesn't it? So why don't more people follow the advice of the Nike ad and just do it? The answer is that they've been shut down by fear of failure. But I've discovered something wonderful about failure....
