Vienna of 1897 is indeed hopping: Freud is discovering the Oedipus complex, Mahler is conducting his symphonies, and the mayor, Karl Lueger, is inventing modern, populist anti-Semitism-which the young Hitler will soon internalize. Making this a true oedipal drama, Wheeler's father and grandparents come to town, too, all at different ages, and with very different agendas. Edwards has great fun with time travel paradoxes and anachronisms, but the real romance in this book is with the period, topped by nostalgia for the old-school American elite, as represented by the we-all-went-to-the-same-prep-school Burdens. This novel ends up a sweet, wistful elegy to the fantastic promise and failed hopes of the 20th century.

He contributed to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and was the author of many other horological works including Clock and Watch Repairing, Complicated Watches and their Repair, Practical Clock Repairing, Watch and Clock Encyclopaedia, Clocks and their Value, Horology ('Teach Yourself Series'), Practical Watch Adjusting and Springing, The Watchmaker's and Modern Engineer's Lathe, Watches and their Value, etc. Donald de Carle died in 1989.

I used to read books written by psychics all the time, but it's been quite a while. I saw this book and I've always liked James Van Praagh, so I got it. I enjoyed this book very much. In fact, I have a website and I actually stopped reading, to add another page to my site about guilt. I realized that absolutely everything happens for a reason. There are so many people that have some kind of guilt, over their loved one's passing. There's no reason for it. It's all part of the plan. Even better......the part where we think that our loved one's are dead, but they say that they are much more alive and aware, than we are. Thanks James!!

I just finished this book. I really enjoyed reading it. My mom crossed over a little over a month ago and I'm on an emotional roller coaster I can't seem to slow down or get off. I've always been intrigued by James Van Praagh and his abilities. This book allowed him the forum to provide an in-depth analysis of readings that help the audience better understand and overcome struggles with guilt, regret, anger, denial and blame that often arise after suffering the devastating loss of a loved one. All the lessons in the book are "taught" or guided by spirits who relay messages through James to their family members and friends. Because the lessons of forgiveness, taking the "high road," doing unto others and letting the past stop ruling the present are meaningful to those still on the earth plane, this book is a wonderful learning tool for anyone who wishes to reinvent their life and live more authentically. I found the prose and insights incredibly detailed and fresh. I also love that James wrote the book within the context of his own discovery of the meaning behind a recurring dream - a dream that ultimately led him to title his book "Unfinished Business." To his credit, James also provides one of the most coherent and beautifully articulated descriptions of God I have ever read (pg. 160). While virtually impossible to rid ourselves of the negative emotional ties that bind us over night, James contends it's essential we liberate ourselves from them now to the best of our abilities lest we fall victim to taking our unfinished business with us into the spirit realm when we ourselves pass on.

I enjoy James Van Praagh books, I have always believed that that everything happens for a reason. Many people have some type of guilt, and regret over their loved one's passing. In his book Praagh explains that carring the guilt is not necessary; especially when we cannot change, we much accept and move on. Learn from the mistakes and press on in life making sure the same mistake will happen again. A lot of the guilt and regret we have was done by our own choices.

I think someone from the other side must have led me to this book. I've read several of his other books in the past and they changed the way I view death and dying. His description of the after-life spoke to my soul. It's as if what I already knew was completely confirmed by his writings. When I read, it's as if I am brought back "home" to where I belong when I'm not on this Earthly existence.This book is exactly what I needed right now in my life. I am currently facing a lot of stress with my mom, who is facing a very hard recovery from an infection that has left her bed ridden in a hospital for more than a month now. She isn't fighting to recover and my level of guilt has caused a lot of heartache, especially when I try to sleep at night.I read this book and am reminded of the fact that I have to let my mother make her own choices and I am not responsible for the path she chooses to take. It is hers and hers alone to resolve... her own plight, not mine. I can support her, encourage her, but the guilt isn't eating away at me anymore. All because of this book.If you don't believe in Mediums, this book just isn't for you. Skeptics have no right to review this book as their opinions don't really count towards the validity of the stories James shares in this book.He is a great inspiration to those who need him, whom can be helped by him.If you have belief in James, this book is one of the essential reads. Period. Read it, learn from it, and live your life the way you need to live it - not based on misplaced guilt and anger.

About the Author
Everett E. Garrison (1893–1975) was a structural and electrical engineer who developed an exacting method of creating fine bamboo rods. His methods, steeped in the engineering principles he learned during his education, became the standard by which many other rod makers were measured. Mr. Garrison was laid to rest in Ossining, New York.

Hoagy B. Carmichael is a world-renowned expert on fishing tackle with more than forty years of fly-fishing experience. The Garrison-Carmichael Rod Shop that he and Everett Garrison built was recently installed on permanent display at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center in Livingston Manor, New York. Carmichael is the author of five books on fishing including Side Casts, 8 By Carmichael, and the classic The Grand Cascapedia River: A History (Volumes I and II). He lives in North Salem, New York.

Rod Thorn, the Chicago Bulls general manager who selected Michael Jordan, reveals that he came close to trading the man who would become the face of the NBA to Houston for a package that included the previous season's rookie of the year, Ralph Sampson. League history would have been a bit different without Chicago's six championships in the 1990s. Bondy also offers a thoughtful portrait of Sam Bowie, the Kentucky center selected by Portland immediately before Jordan. His career was destroyed by injuries, and as a result he's become the poster child for poor draft choices. Just think how the basketball landscape would have changed had the Houston Rockets traded Ralph Sampson straight up for Michael Jordan! The Bulls would have done it and were waiting for the Rockets to call but Rockets coach Bill Fitch was in love with the twin towers idea.The Sixers had a deal in place to trade the aging Dr. J to the Clippers for Terry Cummings but didn't pull the trigger for fear of fan backlash.Bobby Knight, the dictator that he is, had Michael Jordan in tears during the Olympic tryouts.Charles Barkley showed up at the 1984 Olympic trials not with the goal of making the team, but rather improving his draft status.When the tough Soviet team pulled out of the 1984 games Coach Knight cut Charles Barkley because he didn't care for his personality. But had the Soviets stayed in the Olympics Barkley wouldn't have been cut because his superb playing ability would have been needed to beat the Soviets.Barkley gained 15 pounds within 24 hours to tip the scales at a Sixers predraft weigh in to scare them away from drafting him.I could go on and on with all the interesting facts brought out in this book.This book is not just about who was drafted when but more about how things fell into place. Teams with awful records playing hard at the end of the season because they had traded away their lottery pick - upsetting the teams that had traded for these picks. Teams with their lottery picks tanking it at the end of the season in order to get the highest pick possible. This tanking led to the weighted ping pong ball draft ordering system in place today.It is amazing how many prior drafts and trades came around to help or haunt teams picking in the 1984 draft. For example, if the Rockets had drafted Clyde Drexler in 1983 instead of Rodney McCray the Blazers would have drafted Michael Jordan in 1984 while the Rockets would have had a dynamic duo of Drexler and Olajuwon.This was an excellent book. I highly recommend it.

Some great stuff in here, especially about Bobby Knight and the 1984 Olympic team tryouts. Really enjoyed some of the back story about Charles Barkley in particular. Sam Bowie's story is also fascinating. He will always be the guy who was drafted after Olajuwon but before Michael Jordan. Just a really good guy who is a piece of basketball history.

This is a really great read about the 1984 NBA draft. It's certainly a narrow subject so wouldn't recommend to anyone who isn't highly interested in the NBA.

Great book about the changing of basketball from Jordan's draft. This book was recommended by a friend and I was not disappointed.

I'm a bit of a basketball junkie and was looking forward to reading this for a few months now. I read it in about 4 days and I'm not sure I learned anything. While some salary numbers and a few other secondary stories were interesting, there are no real revelations in this book and the editing leaves a lot to be desired, as there are numerous spelling errors and downright brain farts. At one point, as the story is talking about the Virginia Cavaliers, the author then calls them Cleveland, who are also known as the Cavaliers.The book is basically player profiles on about six guys as they make their way through college and into the NBA, and then a little further into the future. Just about all of it can be found on Wikipedia. If you are a casual fan that is interested in modern NBA history then I'd turn to Wikipedia first. If you're still yearning for more, maybe try this out.

JEFFREY RICHARDS is Professor of Cultural History at Lancaster University, UK, and has published widely on different aspects of Victorian culture. His most recent publications include Imperialism and Music, Sir Henry Irving: A Victorian Actor and his World and Hollywood's Ancient Worlds.
